What Is a Restaurant Activity Report?
· 5 min read
A restaurant activity report is a recurring digest of everything changing in a restaurant market: which locations are opening, which are closing, who is buying whom, what's under construction, and which chains are expanding into the territory. For anyone selling to restaurants, it's the difference between prospecting blind and prospecting with a map.
What a restaurant activity report tracks
- New openings — restaurants that just opened and are still forming vendor relationships
- Upcoming openings — announced or permitted projects with expected opening dates
- Closures — locations shutting down (and spaces about to become available)
- Ownership changes — transfers and acquisitions that reset every supplier decision
- New licenses — liquor, health, and business licenses signaling activity
- Construction projects — build-outs and major renovations in progress
- Expansions — existing operators adding locations
- Concept changes — rebrands and pivots that trigger new purchasing
- Franchise development — new franchise agreements and openings in the market
Why sales teams use one
Every line item in an activity report is a sales trigger. A new opening needs equipment, food, beverage, POS, insurance, marketing, and staff. An ownership change re-opens accounts that were locked up for years. A closure tells a realtor or contractor a space is coming to market. Reps who review a weekly activity report walk into Monday with a prioritized call list instead of a cold directory.
The report format also solves a management problem: it gives sales leaders a defensible view of total market activity, so territory planning and quota setting rest on real opening volume rather than guesswork.
What separates a good report from a listing dump
Three things: verification, timing, and contacts. A good activity report cross-references multiple signals before calling something an opening, timestamps each record so you know how fresh it is, and attaches decision-maker contact information so the intelligence is actionable the moment you read it. A list of addresses without those three elements is a directory, not intelligence.
